As part of the design work for the visual image concept of the XXth Olympic Games in Munich in 1972, the graphic designer Otl Aicher - one of the co-founders of the " College of Design " in the German city of Ulm - created a systematically structured "sign" language. A complex and comprehensive series of symbols helped guide Munich 's international visitors, who between them spoke countless different languages, to the various Olympic locations and provided them with the relevant information they required. Based on the experience gained at the Olympic Games and the application of the system in Frankfurt Airport , Aicher's team developed more symbols which are being used nowadays.
